If his blood sugar went down... he was doing more than replacing a hamburger with other carbs, imho. I don't think I've ever read any doctor which has said that lowering protein intake will lower blood sugar levels.
That's a very vague, non-referenced, kind of thing for NPR, isn't it?

The other thing I considered, as I read the article, was that he never mentions the impact of fruit, vegie farming on the environment(soil erosion, nutrient depletion of soil, nutrient overload in natural waters from run-off, etc) nor which is actually worse.

The only reason I bring these items up is that by decreasing one, and raising the other, is it really a net gain? :)

But, I'm also all for human beings eating how and what they want because we're human beings.

Reggie, I think you and I actually had a live conversation about this topic a few weeks ago. Apparently you listen to women as well as any other man. Hmmm. Anyway...moving on. :D

I think Larry does have a point about animal farming versus vegetable farming. I think it is moot to pit one against the other. Rather, the emphasis of comparison should be on corporate farming versus small-operation farming, or chemical farming versus organic farming, penned-animals versus free-range. etc. etc. etc.

Maybe what the author is trying to say is that "hey, we all gotta eat...but we don't necessarily always have to eat meat, and by cutting back on your meat consumption you are actually helping the environment." But he could just as easily say, "you could also try only shopping for your food at the local farmer's market."

Although I can't say with 100% certainty, though, I would guess that if anyone did a cost benefit analysis comparing meat production and plant production, meat production would come out looking the dirtier of the two.
